What Is Desert Mine

Jewelry is a powerful way to accentuate your allure and inject some magic into your style.  When I think of my heroes, they used jewelry and symbolism to visually tell their story: like Stevie Nicks with her witchy moon necklaces, Ziggy Stardust with his electrifying lightning bolts, or 70’s era Cher with her bold Southwestern turquoise jewelry. These potent symbols create an air of mysticism and other-worldly power. The result is iconic. Jewelry can truly empower you to express your creativity and originality, and to tell the story of who you are and what you are about.

In a world of fast-fashion, there is a lot of generic and uninspiring jewelry out there. I struggled to find affordable jewelry that I really connected with, that would last more than a season or two. I wanted to create a jewelry brand that was exciting and full of life, with handcrafted designs that told tales and carried magic and good vibes. With all the women in mind that I am in awe of and who have beautiful and interesting stories to tell, my mission is to make quality collectible pieces of art that are accessible and special - jewelry that you can layer or mix and match to become part of your signature style to help you express your personality, and make you feel like the best, most confident version of yourself.

Desert Mine Jewelry blends playful, bold designs and colorful, healing gemstones with a vintage 70’s rock ‘n’ roll edge, for creative, free-spirited women. My designs are inspired by desert life: the unforgettable adventures on a road trip to Joshua Tree with friends, the mysterious plants and animals, the quirky UFO culture, and starry night skies. Whether you’re the cactus lady, the badass with the longhorn ring, the artistic spirit with the UFO necklace, or the ethereal moon-sister dripping in celestial magic - Desert Mine Jewelry empowers you to express your true essence, shine bright, and look iconic doing it.

How I work - The lost-wax process

It starts with a sketch

Every project begins with a simple idea. It could be a song, a place, a feeling that gets me going. I then grab a cup of coffee and start sketching concepts. I'll often sketch up to 50 iterations before I land on the expression I love. Sometimes projects take on a life of their own and go in a completely different direction!

Then I create a wax carving

I then melt wax and begin to shape a sculpture through a technique of dripping and smoothing. This lost wax carving technique is over 6,000 years old, with the oldest known example being found in the Indus valley. I use tiny carving and sanding tools to get the details, shape and texture that I want in the piece.

Then it's cast in metal

This sculpture gets placed in a container, plaster is poured in and it is put into a kiln. The wax melts away, hence the term 'lost-wax' and hot metal gets poured into the negative space to take its place. Finally, the piece is tumbled or polished and hand painted with an oxidizing solution to bring out the details.

Who Am I

Ever since I was a child, I have always loved art and design. My passion is music, fashion and pop-culture from the 60’s & 70’s: the golden age of art, fashion and music. My nostalgia for times gone by is a big influence on my design aesthetic.

I discovered the Joshua Tree desert at the same time I started studying jewelry making. I moved to California from Ireland in 2011, and Joshua Tree was unlike anything I had ever seen. Compared to the lush green landscape of home, I saw a different kind of beauty and felt a palpable magic... I was captivated by the animated landscape, the people and the vibe, and Desert Mine Jewelry was born… Like if Ziggy Stardust, and Frida Kahlo had a baby!

I like to approach my designs intuitively. I sit and listen to music, or get into a meditative space, sketch and see what flows. I use an ancient technique called lost-wax carving to make miniature sculptures in wax, that then get cast into metal. It takes around 8 weeks to complete a wax sculpture, which then gets molded and produced in limited quantities, so what you get is a unique piece of art, from my hands to yours.

I also make custom jewelry, like bridal jewelry, and re-purpose old or new gems. So if you’d like to work with me, let’s connect and see if we can create something beautiful together.

The alchemy of this process brings me so much joy, and I hope Desert Mine Jewelry can bring some happiness into your life, too!
